In the nervous system
01 · Where it sits

Parietal lobe

Sensation, spatial awareness and body position. Stroke Profile is usually associated with this part of the nervous system.

A broad teaching association, not a diagnosis. A symptom in one area very often originates somewhere else entirely, and only a neurological examination can establish where.

Cross-section of the brain with one artery blocked and the area it supplies shaded, showing an ischaemic stroke

Ischaemic

A vessel is blocked, usually by a clot. The territory it supplies is cut off — shown here in blue — and begins to fail within minutes.

Cross-section of the brain with a ruptured artery bleeding into the tissue, showing a haemorrhagic stroke

Haemorrhagic

A vessel ruptures and bleeds into the brain. The damage comes from the blood itself and from the pressure it creates.

Which part of the brain a stroke affects depends on the vessel involved, which is why these show the mechanism rather than a single region. Both are emergencies and both look the same from outside — only a scan tells them apart, and the treatments differ.Illustrations: Servier Medical Art, licensed under CC BY 4.0.
