Peripheral nerves

Carrying signals between the spinal cord and the muscles and skin. Sciatica is usually associated with this part of the nervous system.

A broad teaching association, not a diagnosis. A symptom in one area very often originates somewhere else entirely, and only a neurological examination can establish where.

The sciatic nerve is the longest in the body. It leaves the spine in the lower back and runs down the back of each leg, which is why a problem at the spine is felt in the leg rather than where it starts.Illustration: Servier Medical Art, licensed under CC BY 4.0.
